This summer CDOT will be doing road work about 2 miles south of Silverton to reinforce the crib wall under the road.
This will mean that traffic will be confined to one lane with a flagger on each end controlling flows. Expect this to add an additional twenty minutes to the 70 minute drive from Silverton to Durango.
On the positive side, there is no construction scheduled north of town on Hwy 550 this year for the first time in several years. So if your coming from Ouray it should be smooth sailing.

24 Hours- SU-SA Northbound lane closures US 550 Approximately 2 miles south of Silverton, Colorado for crib wall repair. No OS/OW allowed on US Hwy 550 Molas Pass. Motorists will encounter Alternating/Southbound and Northbound single lane traffic controlled by flaggers or portable traffic signals from mile post 68 to milepost 68.9. Within the project area, one travel lane will be closed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and traffic will be diverted onto the other lane.
Work hour delays (7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Saturday) will generally be no more than 20 minutes.
Non-work hour delays are approximately 5 minutes.
Road surface through the area will remain paved through mid-August.
